How to Spring Clean Your Pet

Even if you haven’t done the spring cleaning in your house, you do want to take the time to spring clean your pets.

How to Spring Clean your Pet:

  1. Clean your crates and carriers. It is recommended that you clean crates and carriers once a week if they are used regularly. But if you only use them for a trip to the vet then you may need to clean them less frequently. Use warm soapy water, dishwasher detergent is perfect. Using disinfectant can be hard on your pets sinuses and if you need to use bleach then use a mix of 1 oz to 1 quart of water then rinse and air the crate throughly. It is good to give the good soapy clean a few times a year, and then at least wipe down your crate weekly.
  2. Do the Laundry: If you haven’t been laundering your bedding, it is time to throw it in the washer. Make sure you have bedding that is washable and with removable covers. Do not use scented laundry detergent. If it has been a very long time since their bedding was washed, consider replacing it with new bedding. A weekly laundering schedule is recommended.
  3. Wash their Toys and Dishes: We recommend washing their toys and bowls once a week, but if you don’t then this is the perfect time to grab them and put them in the dishwasher. If they are not dishwasher safe, wash by hand with warm soapy water. If it is a cloth toy, put it in the laundry.
  4. Winter Wardrobe: If your pet has a winter wardrobe, like sweaters, jackets, booties, or winter bedding, wash it before packing it away.  Unscented laundry detergent is ideal. If you have to wash by hand, use warm soapy water and make sure to rinse thoroughly. Store their clothes in a dry area and in a storage container that has a lid. Do not store with moth balls. If you are worried about moths, you can use cedar. Just wash them again when you unpack them next winter to remove the cedar smell.
  5. Stock up on Health Supplies: This is the perfect time to stock up on your Frontline Flea and Tick prevention and Heartgard to prevent heartworms.
  6. Microchips: Get your pets microchipped or update the microchip information if you have moved.
  7. Annual Checkup: Schedule your annual checkup to make sure your pets health is on track.
  8. Groom: Give your pet a bath, a good brush, trim up their nails and coat. Take them to the groomers to get nice and clean and ready for the warmer weather.
