Dental Disease in Cats

Gum Diseas in CatsDental disease is one of the most common health issues seen by our New Mexico veterinarians and it is the most easily preventable. The most common issues include gingivitis, periodontal disease and tooth reabsorption which affects over 50% of cats over the age of 3 years.

Many cats do not display any signs of dental disease even if they are in pain. It is their pain signs that you need to watch out for, such as:

  • pawing at the mouth,
  • head shaking,
  • chewing with obvious discomfort,
  • dropping food from their mouth,
  • swallowing with difficulty,
  • excessive drooling,
  • blood in their drool,
  • refuse to eat dry food
  • reluctance to eat
  • weight loss

Issues such as gingivitis, which leads to periodontal disease, are caused by an immune response to plaque build up. Plaque build up is easy combatted with regular teeth brushing.

If you cat is showing signs of dental health problems you should bring them to your Los Lunas vet for a check up. She may need to have her teeth professionally cleaned. Your veterinarian will likely show you how to brush your cat’s teeth and give you a recommended schedule for brushing, usually a couple times a month.
