The amount your cat pee’s is partially based on how much water they drink, but a typical amount is two times a day. But your cat might be different. When you cat is healthy, it is a good idea to pay attention to how much they go pee so you know what is normal. Once you know what is normal it is easier to figure out what is not normal. Any change in frequency of urination should be reported to your vet immediately. It could be a sign of a bladder infection or Kidney Disease.

Your cat’s urine should be a pale yellow, or golden straw color. It should not be cloudy or difficult to see through. It should not have anything floating in it.  Cloudiness, or debris (floating things) are a sign of bladder or kidney infections.

cat health smelly pee

Did you know that if your cat has been spayed or neutered their urine will smell less? Normal urine will have a slightly pungent, acidic scent. It should not be offensive and should be fairly weak smelling. If you let their litter box pile up, the smell may be stronger because of volume or time left to “ripen”. Pee does not smell less with time, it smells more.

Abnormal Cat Urine

Peeing Outside the Litterbox

It is not uncommon if your cat is having a bladder or kidney problem for them to pee outside of their litter box. This can be directly outside their litter box, or in other places around the house. If your cat suddenly starts having accidents around the house, call your Los Lunas vet immediately.

Abnormal cat urine frequency

If your cat suddenly starts going pee a lot less than usual, this can indicate a blockage, especially in male cats. A urethral blockage can be deadly within hours and needs to be treated immediately.

If you see a sudden increase in their urination frequency, this could indicate a bladder infection. Bladder infections can be very painful and can lead to larger infections. They are easily treated with antibiotics.

Abnormal cat urine color

If you ever notice a change in color of your cats pee, call your Los Lunas veterinarian immediately. People often report dark or bloody urine, and this is a sign of an health problem that needs immediate attention.

Abnormal cat urine odor

How do you know if your cat’s pee smells different? Typically if you feel like you are knocked over by the smell, it is abnormal. If your cats urine smells really strong, there could be a problem and it is good to get it looked at.

How do I know if there is a difference?

The best way to know if there is a difference is to keep a clean litter box. Change your cats litter box daily. If you do that you will quickly notice a change in smell or frequency. There are now cat litters that will change different colors if it detects higher levels of ammonia, which is a sign of an issue. Stay away from the perfumed cat litter, as those mask any smell that could alter you to a potential problem.

Your cat’s pee is often their only way to tell you that something is wrong. It is good to pay attention so you can catch any issue fast. If you have any concerns about your cats urination health, please call us for an appointment.
