Social Distancing from your Pets

cat coronavirus

New Mexico is approaching our peak of the Coronavirus, predicted at the end of May. As you know, both our Los Lunas Vetco clinic and our Albuquerque Vetco clinics are closed following the Governors recommendation. Every day it seems that news is coming out about the Coronavirus. It can all be overwhelming.

What we do know is that the best way to prevent catching the coronavirus is social distancing, but this is not just for people this is for pets too.

Two cats have tested positive for the coronavirus, the same coronavirus that humans are catching. These cats are going to be fine. But this raises big questions on if the virus can be transmitted from pets to people.

Dr. Fauci does not believe that pets can transmit the illness. However, some other doctors are not of the same opinion.

Right now, the only time you need to practice social distancing from your pets is if someone in your household is sick. Keep your pets, and your people, away from the sick person. Even if your pet can’t catch Covid-19 it is possible that the virus could be transmitted through petting.

If you are taking your pet out for a walk, make sure the 6 foot distancing recommendation falls to them as well.

Stay home. Stay safe.
