A Dog’s Bad Reaction to Vaccinations

shot clinic los lunas

Nobody likes shots and that includes our pets. So many of us know that when we get a shot we sometimes feel bad. Does this happen to our dogs? What happens if our dog has a bad reaction to a vaccine?

Thankfully adverse reactions are not that common and most of the time bad reactions are fairly mild. If you are concerned about a negative reaction you can always speak to our vet about it and they will confirm what you should look for in your dog.

Symptoms of a mild reaction to shots. These typically pass in one to two days but can persist for up to a week.

  • Discomfort at the vaccination site
  • Mild localized swelling at the vaccination site
  • Mild fever
  • Low appetite
  • Low energy
  • Sneezing
  • Mild Coughing
  • Runny nose

If you are concerned about a reaction your dog is having, call your Los Lunas vet and ask what you can do to help alleviate the symptoms. Most of the time, just leaving them to rest is sufficient treatment. But always keep an eye on them to make sure that the symptoms don’t worsen.

Symptoms of more sever reactions. If any of these symptoms appear, call your vet immediately.

  • Persistent vomiting or diarrhea
  • Hives aka. itchy bumpy sking
  • Swelling around their mouth, face, neck, or eyes
  • Severe coughing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Collapsing or not being able to get up.
  • Subcutaneous (below the skin) swelling at vaccine site that lasts for more than 3 weeks or that seems to be getting larger.

The risk of an adverse reaction to vaccines is greatly outweighed by the health benefits of receiving the vaccines. There are diseases that vaccines prevent that if contracted are deadly to your dog. Make sure to keep your vaccines up to date with an annual trip to our shot clinic.
