Microchip Your Pet

Scanning for a microchip

A Cat Scan…for a microchip!

In Bernalillo county it is required to have your pet microchipped. It is not required in Valencia County, but it is highly recommended.

Why microchip?

  • It makes it easier to find your pet if they get lost. The microchip gets scanned and your information is right there so they can get you missing pet back to you as quickly as possible.
  • It also provides vaccinations records for your pet.

What is a microchip?

A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice. It is a device that, when scanned with a microchip reader, provides permanent identification for your pet.

How do you put in?

It is super simple to microchip your pet. It is a simple, and painless, injection between the animals shoulder blades. There is no anesthetic required and can be done in the office during a regular exam. Once it has been inserted, there is nothing else you need to do. For people who do not want to have a microchip inserted, you can also get a tattoo.

Is it safe?

They are completely safe. They are made from non-reactive surgical stainless steel. This is similar to what is used to repair broken bones. Occasionally a chip might migrate down your pets neck, but this migration does not cause any discomfort or problems. They can migrate because they are only places beneath the skin.

When can I microchip my puppy/kitten?

Technically you can get your puppy or kitten microchipped at birth, however we recommend you wait until they are at least a month old. When you bring them in for their first set of vaccinations, ask us to microchip.

We can implant your microchip during a normal office visit. So call for a checkup or come by during shot clinic!
